Your Turn to Weigh In

The issue of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is back in the headlines, in full force! This week, SLDN broke the story of a spike in gay discharges at military bases around the country. The news appeared first in a story from the Associated Press, which was carried in newspapers around the country. And this morning, more coverage popped up in the New York Times, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and the San Francisco Chronicle . . . along with a great editorial in today's News-Leader in Missouri.

If your home town paper has covered the rising number of dismissals, it's your turn to weigh in! Write a short, pithy letter to the editor, thanking the paper for their coverage, and highlighting the need to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Remember to include your name, email address, home address and a daytime phone number. And, if your letter is printed, let us know and we'll send you a free SLDN t-shirt!

I recently spoke to a Naval Justice School lawyer while preparing a point paper while at the Senior Enlisted Academy. He basically said to fight the Don't Ask Don't tell Policy, you must fight the "finding" found in the USC10 634 that supports the ban. That finding is Finding 15. Reading Finding 15 you can attack it from many different fronts, especially with regard to the younger generations acceptance of homosexual lifestyle in film and other media. Since Military Policy is based in law, I believe you must focus on that area to have a chance to overturn policy only if the law is changed. What also might be of interest, this JAG suggested that in 20 years, the military will look back on this period and find the law archaic.
